I.T.S.'s Test Equipment

In addition to the personnel, I.T.S. is equipped with a large variety of mechanical testing equipment, making I.T.S. one of the most equipped testing laboratories in the world for all kinds of testing needs.

A sample of available mechanical test equipment includes:

  1. Fully Digital state of the art servo controlled electro-hydraulic test machines with load capacities ranging from a couple hundred to 50,000 lb. Typical tests performed in these machines include fatigue, fracture toughness, fatigue crack growth, and component tests.
  2. Electro-mechanical test machines for very small loads up to 1000 lb. These machines are used for high cycle fatigue, creep-fatigue interaction, relaxation and slow mechanical cycling.
  3. Dead weight creep-rupture machines with loads up to 18,000 lb.  These frames are used for ASTM E139 creep & E292 rupture testing, component testing, and creep crack growth rate testing.
  4. Electro-dynamic shakers rated from 50 lb to 5,000 lb. A brand new fully digital Unholtz Dickie S202/ST with integrated slip table capable of simulating all forms of vibration fatigue and transportation test sequences up to 2200 Lbs.  These shakers are used for vibration, fatigue, wear and fretting tests.
  5. Miscellaneous equipment includes environmental chambers, shock machines, thermal testers and crack monitoring equipment.
The friction and wear equipment currently available includes:
  1. A Multi-Specimen Fretting Tester with variable frequencies to a maximum of 1,000 Hz, a maximum amplitude of 0.25", maximum temperature of 1500°F (816°C), and a dead weight loading system.
  2. A Faville LeValley Falex-1 Ring and Block Tester with Hertz stress up to 110,000 psi, velocities to 470 fpm, temperature to 500°F (260°C).
  3. Two-(2) Faville LeValley Falex-6 Multi-Specimen Test Machines offering the ability to perform over 50 different test geometries simulating sliding, rolling, oscillating or combinations of sliding and rolling contacts.  The addition of various adapters allow for dry, wet, heated or cooled conditions
The Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) evaluation equipment currently available includes:
  1. Rapid elevating computer controlled CM furnaces.  Capable of reaching 3100°F (1705°C) in the matter of minutes.
  2. JETS gradient tester that utilizes natural gas torches on TBC surface and compressed air cooling on the backside to simulate in service turbine conditions both land and air based.
  3. Electro-screw frame with very precise small scale load cells for testing free standing TBCs.  Thus producing the bend strength and elastic modulus values for design & production.

Specialized test equipment currently available includes:

  1. Digital Holography System performs vibration analysis; including mode shaping and MAC calculation.
